THE SIMPLE GEAR THAT MATTERS THE MOST

Josue Riley - September 3, 2026

When it comes to fishing, you can have all the newest rods, reels, and electronics, but some of the most important gear is often the simple stuff.

For our team at Treble Hook Outdoors, there are a few things that almost always come with us on the water: a reliable knife, an organized fishing bag, and a good pair of Crocs.

A dependable knife is one of those tools that can be used for just about anything. Cutting line, opening packages, cleaning fish, or handling whatever else comes up during a day on the water, it’s always good to have one close by for any adventures fishing will take you.

Keeping an organized fishing bag is just as important. There’s nothing worse than knowing you have the right lure or piece of gear but not being able to find it. Having everything organized and easy to access helps us spend less time digging through tackle and more time fishing.

And of course, you can’t forget the Crocs. Whether we’re fishing from the boat, kayak, bank, or just hanging around camp afterward, they’re comfortable, easy to clean, and perfect for a long day outdoors.

None of this gear is complicated, but having equipment you can rely on makes every fishing trip better. Sometimes the simple things are the ones you end up using the most.

TIPS FOR GETTING HUNTING LAND PERMISSION

Dugan Kuzma - August 7, 2026

I’ve been chasing migratory birds since I was a little kid, and over the years I’ve learned that one of the most important parts of waterfowl hunting isn’t calling birds or setting decoys, it’s earning permission to hunt private land. After countless conversations with landowners, I’ve picked up a few lessons that have helped me gain access to more properties.

The biggest piece of advice I can give is to start with a proper introduction. Walk up, offer a firm handshake, and introduce yourself by your full name. That simple gesture shows respect, confidence, and that you’re willing to take the time to build a genuine relationship instead of just asking for a favor.

Once you’ve introduced yourself, don’t rush into asking for permission. Take a few minutes to have a conversation. Ask questions about the farm, the crops, or how the season has been. Show a genuine interest in the land and the person who owns it. Farmers appreciate people who respect their property, and building a personal connection can go a long way.

When the conversation naturally leads into your request, politely ask if they would consider allowing you to hunt their property. Be sure to let them know that you always pick up your empty shells, respect fences and crops, close gates behind you, and leave the property exactly as you found it…or better. Make it clear that you’re willing to follow any rules they have and that your goal is to be the kind of hunter they’d gladly welcome back.

Whether the answer is yes or no, always thank them for their time and remain respectful. If they aren’t comfortable giving permission, you can politely ask if they know of another landowner in the area who might be open to allowing hunters. Many farmers know their neighbors well, and a recommendation can open doors you wouldn’t have found otherwise.

Finally, remember that your reputation matters. Farming communities are close-knit, and landowners often talk to one another. Every interaction leaves an impression. Even if you don’t get permission that day, treating every landowner with courtesy, honesty, and gratitude can pay off in the future. A good reputation takes time to build, but once you’ve earned it, you’ll find that getting permission becomes much easier.

HUNTING PREP

Paige Latimer - July 22, 2026

One of the most important parts of any hunt happens long before opening day.

No matter what tag you draw, every successful hunt starts with preparation. Countless hours go into checking cameras, target practice, dialing in your gear, learning the areas, and training for the backcountry. Those hours spent are what sets you up for success when the opportunity comes along.

With this hunting season coming up I have a few exciting hunts to look forward to. I’ll be chasing deer and pronghorn this year, and helping with an elk hunt! To prepare for these hunts I have been doing a lot of pre season scouting. Getting out in the backcountry and setting up trail cams is always the first thing I do.

I make sure to regularly check the cameras to get a good understanding for what animals are in the area. See if the ratio of animals is worth my time to set up  there. I also sight in my bow and rifles. I consistently practice. I want to make sure I’m confident with my skills and can take a clean shot on an animal when the opportunity presents itself.

And lastly I prep with my gear. Depending on what hunt I have and which weapon I’m hunting with I need to gather gear for that hunt. I like to go through everything that will be in my pack and replace batteries, make sure nothing is broken or missing, buy ammo or broad heads, and go through everything I might need.

It might not be the most exciting part of hunting, but it means I can spend more time enjoying my hunt, and eliminate any Issues that could have arrived.

The Crispy Hog

“THE CRISPY HOG “

Cody Wright - July 18, 2026

Brioche Buns Weber Grills Cajun Seasoning

Butter Pepper Jack Cheese

Mayonnaise Jalapeños (fresh, sliced)

Pork Loin Crispy Onions

Grocery List

It’s called “The Crispy Hog,” and it’s about to become your new favorite pork loin sandwich.

Start by seasoning pork loin with Weber Grills Cajun Seasoning, then grill it indirectly at 300–325°F until it’s fully cooked and juicy.

While the pork is cooking, butter your brioche buns and toast them in a skillet until they’re perfectly golden brown.

Spread mayonnaise on both the top and bottom bun, Thinley slice then add a layer of the grilled pork loin. Top it with Pepper Jack cheese, fresh jalapeños, and a generous handful of crispy onions.

Close it up, take that first bite, and you’ll understand why it’s called The Crispy Hog. Smoky, cheesy, crispy, and just the right amount of heat this sandwich has everything. The only thing it’s missing… is your mouth.

ONE PAIR, EVERY SEASON

Josue Riley - June 23, 2026

If there’s one piece of gear that never leaves my truck, it’s a good pair of mud boots.

Living in North Carolina, mud is just part of the outdoors. Whether I’m dragging my kayak to the water before daylight, wading into a duck blind, sneaking into a deer stand after a rain, or simply working outside almost every day in clay and mud, my boots get used year-round.

I’ve learned that cold, wet feet can ruin a hunt or fishing trip in a hurry. Having a dependable pair of boots means I can focus on what really matters—the experience, the people I’m with, and making memories outdoors.

Fishing, duck hunting, deer hunting, or just getting work done around the property, a quality pair of mud boots has earned a permanent spot by my door. Some gear is nice to have. Good boots are a necessity.

MUST HAVE GEAR

Paige Latimer - June 5, 2026

When I’m out in the backcountry, one piece of gear that never leaves my pack is a headlamp. It’s one of those items you don’t think much about, but it’s my most used piece of gear I carry.

Take my recent elk hunt, for example. I had been sitting for hours without hearing or seeing much of anything. As the day went on, I fully expected to pack up and head home early. Then, in an instant, everything changed.

The hillside suddenly came alive. Elk were pouring down the mountain in front of me, and the buck fever came on. Moments later, the bull I had been waiting for 14 days for stepped out at 40 yards. I settled in, took the shot, and watched him disappear into the pines.

After giving him some time, we started tracking. What I thought would be a quick recovery turned into a much longer search than expected. It got dark fast. Before I knew it we were tracking him in the pitch black mountains.

Eventually, we found him, but the work had only just started. We spent the next several hours deboning, packing meat, and then hiking back out to the truck.

Without dependable headlamps, that night would have been way more difficult, and honestly I’m not sure we would have found our way back out. When you’re miles from the trailhead and the sun goes down, a reliable light source isn’t just a convenience; it’s an essential piece of gear that can make all the difference.
