MUST HAVE GEAR

Paige Latimer - June 5, 2026

When I’m out in the backcountry, one piece of gear that never leaves my pack is a headlamp. It’s one of those items you don’t think much about, but it’s my most used piece of gear I carry.

Take my recent elk hunt, for example. I had been sitting for hours without hearing or seeing much of anything. As the day went on, I fully expected to pack up and head home early. Then, in an instant, everything changed.

The hillside suddenly came alive. Elk were pouring down the mountain in front of me, and the buck fever came on. Moments later, the bull I had been waiting for 14 days for stepped out at 40 yards. I settled in, took the shot, and watched him disappear into the pines.

After giving him some time, we started tracking. What I thought would be a quick recovery turned into a much longer search than expected. It got dark fast. Before I knew it we were tracking him in the pitch black mountains.

Eventually, we found him, but the work had only just started. We spent the next several hours deboning, packing meat, and then hiking back out to the truck.

Without dependable headlamps, that night would have been way more difficult, and honestly I’m not sure we would have found our way back out. When you’re miles from the trailhead and the sun goes down, a reliable light source isn’t just a convenience; it’s an essential piece of gear that can make all the difference.
